Filmmakers: i rent a lot of equipment, should i buy a poor $100 DV camera just for the transfers? instead of..?

Instead of paying for video transfers all the time from DV to CD; would it effect the quality of the transfer? i don't want to have to pay each time i need to convert footage, i thought about buying an old DV camera, and after i shoot the footage in a good camera and return it, i'll be able to transfer the material from the DV Tape to my PC via the old camera; would that effect the quality?
