Is the footage from Paranormal Activity real?

I was told the whole story was a hoax and just a story, but the footage didn't seem very theatrical like it was made in a home. Is that the real footage from this story? Or was it reenacted? And is it believed that all of it is true? and have they ever found anything regarding the girl?
