How can i prevent glitter falling off my shoes?

i've applied glitter to my shoes and was wondering would it be a good idea to apply a thin layer of clear glue over the glitter to prevent it from falling off but i dont want it to ruin the effect of the glitter.. is this a good idea or would something else be better such as hairspray..
