How do I build a working claw/crane machine?

I'd like to make preferably using parts I can find around the house. I will buy parts if I need to, but I'd rather not use a kit, although I will buy that if I need to. Most importantly is that it should not be too expensive and that it has the ability to pick up a stuffed animal. I'm also a beginner, so please be clear in your instructions and use language I can understand. Please no crazy, stupid, or answers that send me to instruct-ables, or answers that don't answer the question. Thanks.
