I have made a prototype, which is an add-on to something that is already in use by many people?

My idea is new and I want to share it with large companies but want to make sure that I don't end up with nothing! I have a prototype and video footage of it working. What else do i need to do before I take it to the big guns?! Basically, I don't want to get ripped off. Any knowledge would be much appreciated
