How do I make MPEG-4 videos user friendly for Windows Movie Maker?

I need to make a video for a class project and was just planning on editing the videos with Windows Movie Maker. After uploading the videos from the camera to my computer, WMM isn't letting me use the footage. I normally use Mpeg on WMM and it lets me, so can someone help me here?
