Can someone divorce their spouse while they are deployed?

A friend of mine is currently deployed to Afghanistan. His wife is threatening to divorce him. They have a child together and one on the way. Is she able to take him for everything he's got while he is away and basically defenseless? What are the proper steps he should take to prevent her from taking his money and his children?
